The best review I have seen on "The 4-Hour Chef"

From Amazon:

"I ordered this book having read the 4 hour body and expected something similar. But this book isn't similar to any other book I've read. First of all, you have the quality of the book itself. Plenty of beautiful, fun pictures, decent quality pages etc. I was surprised to see that the hardcover, when you remove the sleeve, has the exact same cover as the sleeve itself. However, most people don't buy books for the pictures, and let me assure you this book doesn't disappoint. The book is logical and the recipes seem easy to begin with. I didn't think that within a day of reading it I would be preparing a meal involving lamb shanks!

But one of the best things about this book is that it isn't just a cookbook. In my initial flick through, I learnt how to capture a pigeon in a park, the principles behind learning Spanish (or any other language), and how to memorise a deck of cards in a minute. Not yo' mama's cookbook!

I would definitely recommend this book. If there are any drawbacks whatsoever it might be that Tim's average audience earns an above average salary, and so to do everything as recommended you have to be willing to spend a few quid here and there.

Other than that, as I say, the book gets top marks for both content and presentation."

By the way I would agree with people who say not to buy this title on the Kindle. It is a beauty to behold - and needs to be appreciated in real life.

Scotland is a cold country............

I don't want to say I told you so but..................

Swansea 1-1 Man Utd

Swansea manager Michael Laudrup: "It was very important result, for a club like Swansea in only the second season in the Premiership. It was difficult and for the 10 minutes after they scored, we struggled a bit but we came back into it. They had the bigger chances, but we had the spirit and the players really wanted a result.
"We have to improve on set-pieces but it is logical. We don't have many players of 6' 5" it is something that you have to accept because of the way we play.
"It is important to get points against the top teams but for me it is more important to get things from the games against Wigan, Reading or Fulham."

More complaining Success! £10 in

God - I should complain full time! Received an apology letter and a £10 cheque in the post from Bell's Bakery today. I had found a little bone in my steak pie.

If you receive an unsatisfactory product then it is your duty to complain.

Offering my services

Deep down I'm a nice guy. I met a gentleman at an Event who ran a Debtbuster operaton. This interested me as one of my mottos is "where there's muck there's brass". Here is what I've offered them:

Hi Fxxxxx,

we met at the recent Scottish Property Meet in Glasgow. I was the gent with properties in Corby, Northants. I have a wee offer for you. At the moment I am working Part-time in the Publishing Industry but was formerly a Mortgage Adviser (CeMap). I am free everyday from around Noon onwards. I was wondering if I could offer my services to you for Appointments in the East of Scotland. From my base in Clackmannanshire I am 20mins to Dunfermline, 35mins to Perth. Basically it is a good location for anything in the north east portion of the Central Belt. I was thinking that this could possibly help your business out. If you need me once a week or once a year it wouldn't matter.

Please let me know if this idea has any legs.

Kind regards,

Ross.

Start a Terry Nappy Business

According to “Real Nappies for London”, Terry Nappies are better for Babies, save people money, are sustainable, reduce waste, look good and encourage earlier potty training. My plan is to offer a service where Nappies are delivered and collected daily from a defined area. Let’s take Clackmannanshire as an example. I would imagine that there are probably c. 1250 Nappy wearers in Clackmannanshire. Our aim would be to get just 1% using our service (13 kids). We will bring fresh Terry Nappies to the door every day. On delivery we will take away any dirties that the address has from previous days – always making sure that the customer has a balance of 3. The customer pays us a sum every week by direct debit. Sign-up would be 3 months at a time with automatic roll-on and a 2 month cancellation notice period. Plastic nappies are roughly 30p a pop so 3 per day would cost a Mum £6 per week. We’d therefore charge £5 a week to give the mum a saving. With 13 customers that gives us an income of £3380 per annum. Terry Nappies can be bought for £3 a piece on Ebay. With 13 customers we’d need a stock of c. 60 meaning an outlay of £180.

There are a few reasons why we can make this profitable:

·         We will be route planning and combining drop offs with other business journeys on the list.

·         If we are delivering by van it will be fuelled by LPG. Even better, if your round is tight enough, you could deliver by bike.

·         We will be guerrilla marketing and will therefore have a £0 publicity spend.

·         We might be washing the nappies via Hotpoint Willie machines (powered by Solar) or we might even build our own pedal powered machine (see next post).

The 4 Hour Work Week - Thumbnail Review

Ferriss is known for his application of both the Pareto principle and Parkinson's Law to business and personal life. He has also taken the position that technology such as email, instant messaging and internet-enabled PDAs complicate life rather than simplify it. His teachings fit under the umbrella of what he calls "lifestyle design", in which he promotes "mini-retirements" as an alternative to the "deferred-life" career path where one would work a 9 to 5 job until retirement in one's 60s. This involves breaking what he calls "outdated assumptions" and finding ways to be more effective so that work takes up less time.

On his blog and later in his subsequent books, Ferriss applied this approach to areas other than business. His book on fitness, for example, claims to provide the exercise and diet advice that produces the greatest results with the least amount of effort or time. Ferriss uses the analogy of the "minimum effective dose" to describe this technique. A good example of the idea of Minimal Effective dose can be found if you look up the band “Axis of Awesome”. They could show you how to learn to play 47 well known tunes on the guitar – by only learning 4 cords!

Another thing Ferriss talks about is how you need to realise that if you “lose everything”, you actually haven’t lost that much. He said that he considered what would happen if the first incarnation of his company had went bust. He wrote that he would have to downsize to a wee flat, he’d sell of his baubles and would get a job in a bar. This would tide him over until he could get back on his feet. This is a good point, well made. The unfortunate thing he doesn’t mention is that most people in Scotland are tied up in such a web of debt that they would be declared bankrupt within a few months of non-payments and therefore would have a doubly hard climb back up the hill of success. From my point of view you need to minimise your direct debit commitments. Recently my wife stopped working full time. Due to this I needed to take over her commitments and I was literally astounded by her level of DD’s (...... not her 38DD’s!). She had council tax, TV License, AA, Weight Watchers, Optical Express, Sky, Mobile Phone, the lot. Every month when her wages came in at least £350 would immediately be siphoned off for these guys. She even had one of those bank accounts you have to pay for, my God. How can you live freely when you have such a millstone around your neck. My advice to youngsters entering the world of work is to trim your direct debit commitments down to an absolute minimum. Sky? Watch via your laptop for free. TV License? Watch on your laptop and you’ll never get caught (and I’m saying that as an Ex TV Detective). Weight Watchers? Take up gardening and eat less junk food. Mobile Phone? Go PAYG; Phone the people you want to speak to but hang up before they answer. They’ll call back to see what you want. Bank Account? Never, ever pay for a Bank Account. You are already paying for it via the terrible interest rate you receive on your savings.
