Easy money?

   Have you ever noticed how quicklt Celeb books come out nowadays? Within two seconds of Katie Price getting married you have Jordan: The Love Story on the shelves at Tesco and ASDA. Having read a few of these books myself (inc. Alexandra Burke) I can see that there is no real mystery regarding how they are written. Basically the authors keep tabs on celebs, perhaps via buying all the Sunday Papers and also through Google Alerts, and update a draft copy as they go along.

   I'm sure they have about ten books on the go at any one time, updating them all every week. At the point that one has a momentous occasion - marriage, divorce or death, all they need to do is re-edit there draft to fit the tone of the occasion and then add a closing chapter.

  This isn't the easiest job in the World, and would be time consuming, but for someone ho was immersed in Celebrity culture anyway it could be an interesting and profitable past time.

Hi Jim,



In a nutshell to start an ice cream van business you will need to buy an ice cream van, register with you local council and apply for a "Hawkers" licence and apply for a possible CRB check (confirm with local council) since you will be in direct contact with young children.



It’s just a matter of getting a BASIC FOOD HYGIENE CERTIFICATE finding a regular pitch, or location where you are allowed to stop and serve customers.

Next you will need liability insurance and buying the stock ice cream mixture, ice lollies, sweets, crisp and snacks. For exact prices you will have to contact insurance brokers to obtain a quote for insurance.

The couple started their ­Riverford Organic food delivery franchise in north Oxfordshire just over a year ago.



“Over the last year the business has grown beyond our ­expectations,” says Nigel. “With the marketing and community activity we’ve been running, we’ve taken on 60 new customers in the last three months alone.”

The couple had their own ­horticultural business before looking at Riverford, but things didn’t work out as they hoped.



“We were determined to be our own bosses, but going it alone didn’t give us what we were looking for,” Nigel admits. “We’d work every weekend, picking vegetables on Saturday and selling them on Sunday.



“We did it for a year and soon realised we would be better off letting someone else grow the produce and deliver it to us while we built up the business.”



The couple already knew the south Oxfordshire Riverford franchisee. “He really seemed to enjoy it and do well out of it, and so I became interested in a ­franchise myself,” Nigel says.



The next door territory quickly became available, and the couple went for it. They say they have no regrets about snapping it up.



“Getting support from head office has made life much easier,” Nigel tells me. “We got training and knew what to expect.



“There is no big secret to our success. We just keep marketing and treat our customers well.”



A Riverford Organic franchise costs £18,500. You’ll also need a van and working capital.

Tesco throws a strop and changes its Price Check again as ASDA chuckles into its sleeve

Just in case you are frantically scouring the internet to find something that *doesn’t* have anything to do with some random nuptials today, we are here to ease your suffering.



Yesterday, supermarket giant Tesco announced that they are changing their Price Check scheme for the second time in as many months. Launched at the start of March, Tesco offered double the difference refunds to shoppers who could buy identical products cheaper at ASDA. However, three weeks into the campaign, the maximum cashback was capped at £20. Now, the double the difference has been scrapped altogether, and you will just get the difference back. In vouchers. So you may as well shop at ASDA…



Tesco’s press release refers to “a cottage industry of savvy and determined people” who are manipulating the scheme “just to make money”. While they “commend their ingenuity and determination, but that wasn’t why we set up Price Check”. They are changing the scheme now “to protect the scheme for the majority of our customers”. Absolutely nothing to do with the fact that it is costing them too much money then.



The problem is that this huge retailer, who reported annual profits of £3.8 billion last week, didn’t see this coming. As Bitter Wallet readers will know, consumers are far more savvy than Tesco gave them credit for, and news of which products could be purchased cheaper at ASDA spread like wildfire across the internet via forums, Facebook and Twitter. Money saving expert afficionados were boasting about their gains, one member reportedly spending £126 at Tesco on a shop that would have cost £81 at Asda, claiming a £90 voucher. So now Tesco have chucked the whole scheme in the bin. Along with their toys out of the pram.

Student business idea wins $5,000 in contest

0California State University, Fresno student Justin Page has won a $5,000 first prize in a business innovation contest for his venture to produce and sell natural food products.



Page's idea, Dressings to Impress, would make condiments, marinades and salad dressings free of gluten, sugar, preservatives, dyes, trans fat, hydrogenated oil and other chemicals. He is the winner of the 2011 Student Venture Challenge, hosted by the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Fresno State.



Page is a senior business management major.



Winning a $2,500 award for second place, plus another $1,000 for the People's Choice Award, is Lyle Quillin, a senior entrepreneurship major. His business, Cal Services, would offer complete home services including pool care, lawn care, window washing, on-site car washing and detailing.



Quillin won the People's Choice Award based off of a online vote for his video pitch on YouTube.



The finalists presented their ideas April 30 to a panel of judges.
